Instagram Updates You Need To Know: Summer 2024

They just don't quit do they? We get used to one thing and then they switch things up. Sigh.

Don't fear - here's a quick summary of all of the most recent changes that have been announced on Instagram and what you need to do.

  • Instagram are rolling out the ability to add up to 20 images in a carousel. In case you need an update a carousel is when you have multiple images on one post and the audience can scroll through them. They're great for photo dumps, product updates, news etc.

  • They've announced a major update to their analytics approach. Instagram is rebranding Reels Plays as “views,” which will now serve as the primary metric across all content types, including photos, carousels, and stories. "Views" will take the place of metrics like “Accounts reached,” “Accounts engaged,” “Interactions,” and “Watch time.”

  • Instagram have added 'Notes': a feature that allows users to post short messages, up to 60 characters long, to their followers. Notes can include text, emojis, tagging users, adding music, and recording videos. They appear at the top of the direct messages (DM) section and are only visible for 24 hours. Users can only post one note within that time period. You can now filter your Reels feed to see only Reels that include Notes and the Activity tab now has a section dedicated to viewing the Notes you've shared.

  • The profile feed switches to a portrait layout: You might not have noticed this yet as it is still being rolled out, but some users are seeing their profile feed in a portrait layout rather than 1x1 squares. We've expected this for a while since they gave us the option to post in portrait and it may be that some of your posts look a little squished or formatted oddly on your profile. Try to post in portrait going forwards to avoid this!
