It's really easy to overthink what you're going to post on social media. So much so, that you might end up actually not posting at all. Particularly when it comes to video content and talking to the camera.
When you open up TikTok or Instagram it can be easy to assume that everyone else feels confident picking up their phone and filming a video. I can assure you though, this isn't the case.
The thing is, building genuine connections with your audience is going to be key over the coming year, as is building your personal brand. Both of which will only be enhanced by video content with your face in it!
So 2024 has got to be the year of realising that POSTED is better than PERFECT.
Yes there are certain things you can do to make your content more aesthetically pleasing... but all of that is pointless if you're talking yourself out of actually hitting post because you're worried about what time to post, what hashtags you should be using, or which hook is the best.
Concentrate on your message first and foremost and putting it out there. The tweaking can come later as you build up your confidence. So let's work on that confidence shall we?
1. Practice, Practice, Practice:
Start by speaking to the camera regularly, even if it's just for practice. Film videos talking to the camera about things you're knowledgable in, but if you're rubbish - simply don't post them! Embrace the cringe. The more you do it, the more comfortable you'll become. Experiment with different tones, speeds, and expressions until you find your natural style.
2. Script or Outline:
Prepare a loose script or outline to guide your content. This doesn’t have to be word-for-word, but having key points handy can help you stay on track and feel more confident about what you're going to say. Capcut is great for this!
3. Warm-up Routine:
Before hitting the record button, engage in some warm-up exercises. This could involve simple vocal exercises, stretching, or even a few deep breaths to ease any tension. Imagine you're talking to a friend on FaceTime and go from there.
4. Start Small, Grow Gradually:
Begin with shorter videos or snippets. As your confidence grows, gradually increase the length and complexity of your content. Yes, long form content is going to be big for 2024, but that doesn't mean short form content is dead - it's still performing incredibly well.
5. Review and Learn:
Watch your recordings critically but constructively. Note down what works well and areas for improvement. Learning from each session will help refine your approach and boost your confidence over time. Cut out all of the pauses, umms and ahhhs using a tool like CapCut (which can be done automatically if you pay for the pro version) and make your videos succinct and to the point.
Remember, confidence in front of the camera isn't built overnight. It's a journey of consistent practice and self-reflection. Embrace the process, celebrate small victories, and keep pushing your boundaries.
Embrace the cringe, it's just a by product of success anyway!
